Watkins Tutoring’s Moolah Mastery
Overview: Moolah Mastery is a financial literacy curriculum that I developed that teaches upper-elementary, middle, and high school students important financial literacy lessons and components.
Audience: Middle - High school students.
Curriculum: The curriculum I created scaffolds down to 3rd grade understanding and scaffolds up to 9th grade understanding. Each lesson is equipped with a student workbook, powerpoint presentation, and supplemental materials for student activities.
Implementation: In July of 2024, Watkins Tutoring hosted a free financial literacy session for the community that piloted the curriculum and gained feedback from participants on their thoughts of the curriculum and how effective and engaging it was in their learning. Since July, WT have hosted monthly sessions going through the curriculum and teaching students the importance of financial literacy. Currently, we are partnering with Spark Academy at Patterson Park Public Charter School to administer 26 weeks of financial literacy to upper-elementary and middle school students.
Student Leadership
Overview: As an advisor for the middle school Student Government Association (SGA), I guide students in developing leadership skills, fostering social-emotional learning, and promoting peer-to-peer accountability.
Implementation and Projects: Every month, I challenge the students to create an event with purposeful goals and activities. One example was the "Dollar Dress Down Day." The students, aware of their school's uniform dress code policy, created an activity where students could pay one dollar to dress out of uniform with all funds raised going to an organization that focuses on giving back.
With my support, they raised over $700-an incredible amount equal to the number of their school's population. It was donated to The Door Foundation, which takes care of children and their families throughout the year but most especially during the holidays. This helped in catering for winter needs, food, and other essentials among others that were in dire need of such help.
It is indeed an evidence of the ingenuity, organizational skills of students, and what it taught them about the value of giving back to society and seeing firsthand the strength of community. It served as a great example of how student-initiated ideas can make much-needed differences.
Career Coaching
Overview: As a Career Coach, my primary role is to inspire students to explore and define their college or career aspirations. Through one-on-one sessions or group workshops, I guide students in discovering and utilizing the wide range of resources available to help them achieve their goals.
Implementation and Projects: I design and facilitate workshops and individualized coaching sessions that cover topics such as CTE pathways, high school selection, internships, apprenticeships, and essential life skills, including resume writing, interviewing, and financial literacy.
An example of this work is pictured to the left, showcasing a workshop where students learned about the importance of skills—how they develop throughout their educational journey and transition seamlessly into the workforce. Following each session, students complete an exit ticket assessment to demonstrate their understanding and mastery of the material covered.
This hands-on approach ensures that students not only gain knowledge but also build confidence in applying these skills to their personal and professional growth.
